Most North County itineraries head straight for the coast, but Vista, inland, has plenty to fill a day or a long weekend: a city park with a botanical garden and an open-air theatre, more craft breweries than any other city in the county except San Diego, a historic adobe, and a Saturday farmers market. Here is a practical rundown of what to see, with one note for every section: hours, tickets and seasonal schedules change, so check each venue’s own site before you go.
Start at Brengle Terrace Park
Brengle Terrace Park, at 1200 Vale Terrace Drive, is a City of Vista park. The City of Vista’s facility directory lists an amphitheatre, ballfields, basketball courts, tennis courts, a gymnasium, public art and a tot lot among its features, and it is also home to Alta Vista Gardens and the Moonlight Amphitheatre covered below. Because the gardens and the theatre share the grounds, it is straightforward to combine them in one visit.
Alta Vista Botanical Gardens
Alta Vista Botanical Gardens (1270 Vale Terrace Drive) is a nonprofit garden that describes itself as a community sanctuary. Its own website highlights a Children’s Garden, an ongoing Healing Garden Oasis themed around wellness and happiness, and an “Art in the Garden” section. It also runs Kids in the Garden classes on Saturdays and free festivals such as the Earth Day Festival, so it is worth looking at the events page when you plan your dates. Because the gardens close for some private and members-only days, confirm that it is open on the day you want to visit.
Moonlight Amphitheatre
Moonlight Stage Productions is the City of Vista’s cultural arts program, and its website says it stages Broadway musicals under the stars in the summer at the Moonlight Amphitheatre in Brengle Terrace Park. Its AVO Playhouse, at 303 Main Street downtown, is home to Moonlight Youth Theatre productions. Look up the current season and book tickets on the Moonlight Stage site, since the schedule changes from year to year.
Rancho Buena Vista Adobe
For history, the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe at 640 Alta Vista Drive is a historic building the City of Vista offers tours of through its Adobe Days program. According to the Downtown Vista event listing, tours cover the adobe’s history as one of Vista’s oldest historic buildings, how adobe homes were built, the architecture of California’s rancho era, daily life before electricity and modern conveniences, and a hands-on adobe-themed activity. Tours are offered on specific dates, so check the City of Vista’s recreation pages for the current schedule before you head over.
The craft-beer scene
Vista’s breweries are a big part of the draw. The city’s own blog reports “25 micro-breweries operating in the city of fewer than 100,000 people,” and says Vista has more breweries than any other city in San Diego County except San Diego itself. It also notes that breweries host events such as tastings and live music, and links to maps of the city’s breweries and beverage makers, which are useful for planning a route. Among the brewing companies the blog says have a presence in Vista are Belching Beaver, Latitude 33, Mother Earth, Pure Project and The Lost Abbey.
If you want a place to begin, we have written up Folklore Brewing. As with any brewery crawl, plan a designated driver or a ride home, and check each taproom’s opening times, which vary by venue.
Vista Farmers Market
The Vista Farmers Market runs every Saturday at 345 South Melrose Drive, on the county courthouse grounds just south of Highway 78. The market’s website says more than 50 growers sell produce they raise, along with eggs, honey, cheese, flowers and plants, plus more than 40 food makers selling baked goods, sauces and pickles and a hot-food section with breakfast and lunch from many countries. Local makers also sell soap, pottery, clothing and jewelry. It is a good Saturday-morning stop if you are stocking a kitchen for the weekend, with early-day shopping and a quick bite on site.
Where to stay in Vista
Staying in Vista means you are based in the town where all of the above is located. The Sunset House is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom vacation rental in Twin Oaks Valley, Vista, with ocean views listed among its amenities and room for up to four guests. If you are comparing towns before you book, our guide to where to stay in North County San Diego lays out the options, and our list of things to do across North County covers the coast and beyond.
A simple Vista day
One way to stitch it together: browse the farmers market on a Saturday morning, spend the middle of the day at Brengle Terrace Park and Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, visit a taproom or two in the afternoon, and, if the summer season is on, finish with a show at the Moonlight Amphitheatre. On other days, swap the market for an adobe tour or head to the coast. Whatever you choose, treat the details above as a starting point and confirm times, dates and tickets on the official sites.
