Each spring, a Carlsbad hillside near the coast fills with rows of ranunculus in every colour you can name. The Flower Fields is a working flower farm that opens its fields to visitors for the bloom. This guide covers when to go, what you will find on site, and the practical rules worth knowing before you buy a ticket.
What you are looking at
The flowers are Giant Tecolote Ranunculus. The farm’s history page calls the Tecolote variety “one of the finest strains of ranunculus plants in the world,” and notes that ranunculus come from Asia Minor, belong to the buttercup family, and are also known as Persian Buttercup. The fields cover 55 acres, with roughly five more acres given to other specialty flowers, and the Ecke family continues to own them. On its attractions page the farm describes the site as the world’s largest ranunculus flower field.
The farm itself says its grounds include slopes and dirt paths, so treat the visit as a walk through a working field rather than a stroll through a formal garden.
When to go
According to the farm, the best time to view the flowers is usually late March to early May. It adds that those dates can shift with the weather and with early or late blooms, so the bloom does not follow the calendar exactly. Opening dates and ticket releases are announced each year on the official site, so check theflowerfields.com before you plan around any specific day.
The farm stays open in rain or shine as long as the pathways are safe to walk, though some attractions, the wagon ride among them, may close. Since the farm has dirt paths, wear shoes you do not mind getting dirty.
What is on site
The ranunculus fields are the main event, but the farm lists several other things to do:
- Butterfly Encounter. The farm describes hundreds of exotic, vibrant butterflies fluttering around and landing gently on guests.
- Tractor Wagon Ride. A ride through the blooms. It costs extra, and tickets can be bought after you arrive.
- Sluicing. Sluicing water through boxes of sand to find polished gemstones, also an extra charge.
- Santa’s Playground. Playhouses and gigantic mushrooms.
- Gardens. The farm lists Artist Gardens and Bird Aviaries, plus Demonstration, Illusion and Sculpture gardens.
- Food. The farm lists coffee, ice cream, pizza, tacos and strawberry desserts, and its Pizza Trolley serves artisan pizzas and fresh salads.
Prices and what each admission includes change from season to season, so look at the Buy Tickets and Things to Do pages for the current picture rather than relying on a figure in an article.
Tickets, parking and the rules
General admission tickets are online only, and the farm says they must be bought before you arrive; Tractor Wagon Ride tickets are bought after you arrive. Sales are final with no refunds, although dates can be changed within the season. Groups of more than 25 should contact the farm directly.
The address is 5704 Paseo del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92008. The farm suggests typing “The Flower Fields” into Google Maps rather than the street address, which gets you to the front entrance. Parking is free, in two general lots reached from Paseo del Norte or Palomar Airport Road.
A few rules to know before you go:
- Pets. Pets and emotional support animals are not permitted. Service animals are allowed.
- Accessibility. Parking and restrooms are accessible, but the farm has slopes and dirt paths. It points out that the Tractor Wagon Tour can accommodate wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs and walkers. The farm does not rent wheelchairs or strollers, so bring your own.
- Photos. Personal cameras, phones and tripods are fine for casual photography. Drones are strictly prohibited, and professional shoots have their own photography and filming policy on the site.
- Re-entry. There are no in-and-out privileges once you leave.
Pair it with the rest of Carlsbad
A morning in the fields leaves the rest of the day open. Visit Carlsbad lists several local beaches, including South Ponto, Tamarack-State and Terramar, and a weekly State Street Farmers Market. If you are travelling with children, our guide to kid-friendly beaches in North County can help pick an afternoon stop, and the wider list of things to do in North County has more ideas for filling a spring weekend.
Making a spring weekend of it
Since you need to book a ticket for a set date, it helps to fix your base early. If you would rather have a kitchen and a view than a hotel room, The Sunset House is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Twin Oaks Valley, in the Vista area, and its listing includes ocean views from the main living space. Our guide to where to stay in North County compares the other options.
Before you buy
Check the official Flower Fields site for the current season’s opening dates, ticket release and conditions, since bloom timing shifts with the weather. Buy your ticket for the date you can actually make, wear shoes for dirt paths, and leave the dog at home.
